Epee Theory & Technique
All
Ages
Day & Time:
Thursdays 6:00-7:45 PM (8 classes)
Fee: $200 per 8 week
session (1 class/week)
Prerequisites: Intro to
Fencing and Level 1 Foil
unless otherwise approved by Coach
Gear Rental: Students must
purchase their own GLOVE and EPEE. Other uniform/weapon
components required for class
are included in the course fee.
USFA Membership required
Note: Students will need a 3-ring binder to be
brought to EACH class.
Epee Theory & Technique builds on the foundation of the Introduction to Fencing and Level 1 Foil courses. It serves as the point of entry for CFC’s Epee Development Cycle, in which students alternate between an emphasis on technical mastery on the one hand, and competitive development on the other.
This course presents skills and concepts specific to Epee, as well as reinforcing general principles of Fencing. The student will become familiar with the essential differences between Epee and Foil in terms of equipment, rules, and basic tactics. Areas of instruction include practice in the fundamental elements of footwork and blade-work, general improvement of motor skills, recognizing and identifying the varieties of fencing actions, and an introduction to directing and scorekeeping. Emphasis is placed upon correct technical execution of fundamental actions through focused drills and exercises. New students are challenged to achieve technical competence in each fundamental skill; more advanced students are encouraged to continuously refine their technique, in order to enhance their competitive performance.
Time for bouting is provided toward the end of most classes.
Like Level 1 Foil, this program is more intensive and begins to introduce more complex skills and strategies. At this stage, the fencer is more committed to developing his or her skills. He or she will begin to develop confidence and will be assisted in evaluating his/her own performance. A student new to Epee will typically follow the Theory & Technique course for a full season. Individual progress is monitored through periodic practical examinations. When the student has demonstrated competence in footwork and blade-work fundamentals, he or she may be encouraged to proceed to Epee Tactics & Training. Later, advanced students may return periodically to the Epee Theory & Technique class.
While developing a solid foundation for recreational fencing is the focus of this class, students, upon evaluation and approval, should begin to compete in local tournaments. The Coaches strongly
recommend that students at this level take advantage of
the two nights of Open Fencing which are included in their
class fee ($20/wk, value). Open Fencing is offered
Tues., Weds., and Thurs. evenings from 8:00-10:00PM.

This course continues comprehensive Epee instruction with the introduction of competitive strategy and tactics, as well as the more advanced weapon skills and physical conditioning necessary to support them. Areas of instruction include applications and countermeasures for various fencing actions, the progression of the “Tactical Wheel,” and psychological tactics. Emphasis is placed on preparation for USFA competition through intensive footwork drills, competitive games, and problem-solving exercises. Students are challenged to demonstrate their mastery of fencing skills and concepts through dynamic applications in bouting situations, and encouraged to pursue specific competitive goals.
This program is technically and physically intensive. The fencer will develop more confidence and will be assisted in evaluating his/her performance. At this time students should be competing in USFA tournaments. A student new to Epee Tactics & Training will typically follow the course for a full season. At the discretion of the instructor, the student may be periodically encouraged to return to Epee Theory & Technique for a block of two 8-weeks sessions, in order to refine aspects of his or her technique, and lay the groundwork for further competitive development.
Fencers at this level are ready for Individual Lessons. These are an important component in becoming a more advanced Epee fencer. The instructors expect that students will also take advantage of the Open Fencing sessions which are included in their class fee ($20/wk. value).

Fee: $25 per class or by individual lesson punchcard
Prerequisites: Approval by Coach
Gear Rental: Included in the course fee.

The Wheelchair Fencing Group meets weekly during CFC’s regular 8-week class sessions. Students work with the instructor in a one-on-one basis for approximately 30 minutes and then free- fence.
This program is open to all ages and all abilities. Fencing equipment is supplied by the club, and there are two dedicated wheelchairs on site. Fencers are encouraged to bring their own chairs, however. "Sport Chairs" are the best choice; further information is available at www.iwasf.com
More about Wheelchair Fencing:
Wheelchair Fencing is open to male and female athletes with physical disabilities. The wheelchair is secured to the floor and does not roll, so a more accurate name for this sport might be "Seated Fencing". Competitive wheelchair fencers are classified according to their disabilities so as to provide a more "level playing field".
The goals of Wheelchair Fencing are varied. Having fun, getting physical exercise, learning a new sport, making social contact with others and preparation for competitive fencing are just a few of the positive outcomes participants may realize.
If you think Wheelchair Fencing might be something that you or someone you know would like to find out more about, please go to www.iwasf.com
